Firefighters battle 6-alarm blaze, bone-chilling cold in Charlestown

Firefighters were battling a six-alarm fire, along with freezing temperatures, in Charlestown Friday morning.

The Boston Fire Department responded to the blaze at 144 Bunker Hill St. at around 6:45 a.m. The building houses a laundromat on the first floor and apartments above it.

Six residents were displaced by the fire, officials said. Thick smoke could be seen billowing out of the third-floor home as firefighters aimed water hoses into the window. Ice immediately formed on fire trucks and ladders, with temperatures a bone-chilling 2 degrees at the scene, officials said.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was on scene along with the Red Cross to help the residents.

“They are shaken. They’re upset,” Walsh told The Boston Globe at the scene.“Clearly, something like this, at any time of the year, is difficult. But it’s even more so, probably, during the holiday season…It’s never easy for anyone.’’

The fire reached all three floors of the building. The bottom floor houses Monument Laundromat, which could be seen the Boston-based thriller “The Town,” starring Ben Affleck.

No injuries were immediately reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
