Firefighters investigating after Dartmouth apartment fire

Firefighters extinguished a blaze in the basement of a Dartmouth apartment building Sunday evening, the second major fire on that side of Halifax Harbour in less than 24 hours.

The blaze broke out in a 50-unit complex at 237 Roleika Dr., formerly Churchill Drive, at about 8:30 p.m., Halifax Regional Police said.

Police said at least three tenants ended up in hospital with “minor injuries sustained during the evacuation.”

The Canadian Red Cross said damage was contained to a couple of units, adding most tenants were expected to return home after a couple of hours.

The fire earlier in the day started in the upstairs bedroom of a Princess Margaret Boulevard townhouse at about 1:45 a.m. No one was injured but the flames and smoke destroyed the home, CBC reported.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service could not provide the cause of either fire by Monday evening.
