First Nations traditions and culture are alive and well in the provincial capital, as anyone who visited yesterday’s National Aboriginal Day event at Churchill Square can attest.
Teepees on 102 Avenue greeted visitors to the festivities, along with the chance to sample bannock, learn of First Nations cultures from elders and take in various performances.
Some of the attractions included discussion, singing and drumming with Taz McGillis, who is of Cree, Sioux and Scottish descent; performances by Metis jigger Corbin Poitras and demonstrations of Inuit lamp lighting and throat singing.
“It’s a really neat day,” said National Aboriginal Day co-ordinator Wendy Walker.
“This doesn’t cost the family a thing (to attend).”
