Darren Fisher will now represent East Dartmouth-The Lakes residents in city council chambers.
The businessman beat out six other candidates in Saturday’s byelection for the seat left empty by former city councillor Andrew Younger, who made the jump to provincial politics in June’s election. Younger successfully ran for the Liberals and is now MLA for Dartmouth East.
Unofficial results on Halifax Regional Municipality’s website show Fisher snagged 1,994 votes, while another former East Dartmouth-The Lakes representative, Brian Warshick, trailed in second place with 856 ballots cast in his favour.
The other four candidates vying for the vacant seat were Tracey Devereaux, who managed 826 votes, Phil Brown with 349, Robin L. Allen with 187, John McMillan with 101 and Shane Dafoe with 78 votes.
On his election campaign website, Fisher said he is a father of two young children and spends much of his time in hockey rinks and on ball fields. He owns general stores with his brother and has helped raised thousands of dollars for groups such as Bryony House and the IWK Health Centre, the website says
“As your councillor I will listen closely to the people of my community and I will use my energy to make things happen,” Fisher wrote.
