The Flyers are on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, lacking needed salary cap space and eager to make room for younger players.

GM Ron Hextall achieved just that Wednesday shipping off defenseman Luke Schenn and high-priced but often-scratched winger Vincent LeCavalier to the Kings in exchange for a third round pick in 2016 and forward prospectJordan Weal.

The trade deadline is still several weeks away, but if the Flyers can’t gain ground in the Eastern Conference standings it could be the first of many moves to make way for a bevy of talented players blocked in lower levels of the Philly farm system.
