For Watson, it’s a sign of the times

It’s the first sign of the municipal election season.

Mayoral candidate Jim Watson installed the first of thousands of signs on the lawn of campaign co-chair Mary Pitt in Nepean Thursday.

It was the first day that election signs were permitted.

“We’re putting signs out from Fitzroy Harbour all the way to Cumberland and everywhere in between,” Watson said.

“We think lawn signs are a great grassroots way of individuals in the community expressing their support for one candidate or another.

“I’ve always found lawn signs an inexpensive way of getting the message out. Some candidates may have more money and might want to put more money into venues like television and radio.

“We’ll be doing some of that as well, but we supplement that kind of advertising with grassroots advertising called the lawn sign.”

The signs are smaller than ones used in previous elections to reduce environmental impact and cost.

Although he’s using “old tried and true methods, like lawn signs, we’re very much a modern campaign,” said Watson.

“I think we have the best website. It’s been visited by over 40,000 people. My chief opponent doesn’t have a website up yet. And we’re using Twitter, we’re using Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube.”
