Recent reports indicate that Frederik Gulbrandsen could well be headed to the New York Red Bulls on a loan deal as the Norwegian international appears to currently be out of favor with sister club Red Bull Salzburg. And there is no one better to give a scouting report on the newest possible Red Bull than the last Norwegian to play for the team.

Jan Gunnar Solli spent two seasons in New York with the Red Bulls, the former Norwegian international proving to be a versatile midfielder and outside back who brought a tremendous work rate to two playoff teams. In terms of Gulbrandsen, who moved to Salzburg this past summer after spending the entirety of his career up to that point in Norway, Solli is high on the striker and how he might fit in MLS.

Solli played against Gulbrandsen when he was with Vålerenga in 2013. The former Red Bull called the likely new addition “One of the most talented young players in Norway at that time. Known for his hard-working ability and speed.”

“Good one vs one and always hustling for the space behind enemy lines,” Solli told Metro.

“Physically strong too. Not just a fast player.”

Solli made 40 appearances for Norway during his international career.

He also likened Gulbrandsen to former New York teammate Luke Rodgers in some regards, while creating a clear distinction between the two. Rodgers became a fan favorite in New York during his one season with the club in 2012. Solli likens Gulbrandsen’s work rate to Rogers but sees a very polished player coming to the Red Bulls.

“I simply think he will be a good fit – and I have a hard time finding someone who reminds me directly of him actually,” Solli said. “Which I believe is a good thing.”

Solli also is seeing a growing career as a DJ and ironically played in New York in late January at the Marquee. He is aiming to have a new release out in May and has several international bookings planned for the offseason such as Hakkasan on April 14th and the next day at the Omnia in Las Vegas.
