It’s been a little over six months since footballer Frank Lampard crossed the pond to join New York City FC, after spending 18 years playing top flight football in the Premier League, in England. The 37-year-old former Chelsea and Manchester City star, who’s joined Italian Andrea Pirlo and Spaniard David Villa at the NYC club, chats to Metro about his move and new beginnings.

You had a distinguished career in the Barclays Premier League and with England. What made you decide to move to the U.S. and play in New York?

It was the perfect challenge for me. I think that everything I did in the Premier League with Chelsea and Manchester City prepared me to be here — I also wanted a change. I like the MLS (Major League Soccer) and have watched it since David Beckham made the jump over there and the league improved. I love America; it’s a football experience and a life experience for me. At this stage of my career, it was the perfect scenario.

How do you interact with your fellow star players, such as Andrea Pirlo and David Villa, who joined you in NYC FC?

Easily, because both are great players; they are also great people. It was easy to mesh with the whole club from people behind the scenes to the coaches. It’s a family-oriented organization and we want to make New York proud of us. We have to do the best job possible, because this is one of the biggest cities in the world. I’ve enjoyed every moment so far.

You’re with NYC FC now, but you’ll always be known for your years with Chelsea. What is your fondest memory of the 13 years that you spent with The Blues?

Winning the Champions League — I was very lucky. I never thought, when I got to Chelsea, that we’d achieve so much and be part of a club that had so much success. For me, it was two moments: Winning the Premier League for the first time in 2005 and wining the Champions League in 2012.
