Fundraiser aids ‘loyal … sociable’ pugs in distress

It’s hard to imagine a need for a rescue for pugs — dogs bred specifically to become companion animals and known for their friendliness — but according to Genevieve Boucher, the need is definitely there.

“They need to be rescued, just like any breed,” said Boucher, who founded Under My Wing Pug Rescue in 2006.

The organization, which received its registered charitable status at the beginning of this month, held its twice-annual Pugstock fundraiser at Britannia Beach yesterday. It’s also a chance for pug owners to get together and to bring attention to the breed.

Volunteer and pug owner Bruce Earland attended with his three dogs.

“They’re very loyal, very sociable dogs,” he said. “They make great pets.”
