Game grub — with a twist

We are a football family but I must admit; although I don’t really know everything about the game, I certainly enjoy watching it and specifically enjoy the snacks.

I’m simply a non-partisan participant and just happy to have good food to share with friends.

A simple menu is key with tasty, but upgraded, favourites like nachos and pizza or chili. Whether you are eating before or during the game, kick it off right with comfort food and cold beer.

Guacamole Salsa Dip

Fresh ripe avocados make a creamy dip that is perfect for dipping crunchy tortilla chips into.

Need some added colour? Try some veggies to dip alongside.

The combination of flavours will make this guacamole a new household favourite for every sporting event.

Prep time: 10 mins

Makes: 2.5 cups (625 mL)

Ingredients:

• 2 ripe avocados
• ½ cup (125 mL) hummus
• ½ cup (125 mL) salsa
• 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
• 1 tbsp (15 mL) lime juice
• ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt
• Chopped fresh coriander (optional)

Preparation:

1. In large bowl, using a potato masher, mash avocado until smooth. Stir in hummus, salsa, jalapeno, lime juice and salt. Sprinkle with coriander, if using.
2. Serve with tortilla chips or veggies.

Chili Pizza

I decided to take the two things most people like to eat while watching and enjoying the Super Bowl and combine them into one. I hope you like it, my crowd certainly does.

• 1 tbsp (15 mL) chili powder
• 1 tsp (5 mL) dried oregano leaves
• ½ tsp (2 mL) ground cumin
• 1 can (14 oz/398 mL) diced tomatoes, drained
• Half sweet red pepper, diced
• 1 cup (250 mL) cooked canned drained and rinsed kidney beans
• ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt
• 1 pkg (680 g) pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
• ¾ cup (175 mL) pizza or pasta sauce
• Pinch cayenne pepper

Preparation:

1. In a nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat and cook onion and garlic for about 3 minutes or until softened. Add beef, chili powder, oregano and cumin and cook, breaking up meat for about 8 minutes or until browned. Add tomatoes, red pepper, beans and salt and cook for about 5 minutes or until thickened. Set aside.
