Gay Olympic skater credits city for outing

A Kiwi speedskater, the first Olympian to come out after competing in the 2010 Games in Vancouver, credits the city and Whistler’s Pride House for helping in his decision.

Growing up, Blake Skjellerup couldn’t see a way to be gay and in competitive sports.

“Competing in the Olympics and being in such an open environment like Vancouver made me realize that all those prejudgments I had were all wrong,” he said.
