The Giants were looking for help in the backfield in the wake of Andre Brown’s leg injury and David Wilson’s fumbling issues against the Cowboys. They found it in the personage of a player very familiar to the New York fans.
Brandon Jacobs re-signed with the Giants Tuesday, the team announced.
“Whatever they need me to do,” Jacobs said. “Whatever role they want me to play, I’ll come in and do it. I know the offense. I know they’ve made some tweaks here and there, and I’ll do whatever I have to do. I look forward to teaming up with David and [Michael] Cox and Da’Rel [Scott] and Dre [Andre Brown] whenever he gets back and try to make everybody around us better. We want to be the group that leads the team to victory.”
Jacobs played for the 49ers last season, though he was injured and often feuded with the coaching staff. He played in just two games and had five carries for seven yards.
The 31-year-old running back spent seven seasons with the Giants. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Southern Illinois.
It’s unknown how much Jacobs will contribute or how soon, but the team was seriously in need of depth after Brown fractured his leg in the final preseason game. The Giants placed him on injured reserve with the designation to return, but he won’t be eligible until after six games.
In the meantime, the Giants have the rookie seventh-round pick Cox and Scott to go with Wilson, who was expected to be the featured back this season even with Brown healthy. But Wilson had two fumbles in the first half in Week 1 against the Cowboys and was back in head coach Tom Coughlin’s doghouse.
But even Scott had his issues. He rushed for 23 yards on five carries, but most memorably botched a screen pass in the fourth quarter which was picked off and returned for a touchdown to ostensibly end the game.
The team had also worked out former Jets running back Leon Washington and were interested in Willis McGahee and Jonathan Dwyer.
