Giants’ Nicks out three months with broken foot

The Giants will have to get by without their top receiver for most of the offseason.

They announced Thursday afternoon that Hakeem Nicks broke a bone in his right foot during organized team activities (OTAs). He will undergo surgery to have a screw inserted in the fifth metatarsal on Friday and be out three months.

The Giants report for a mandatory minicamp on June 12, which he will miss, and then training camp on July 26. His timetable for recovery would put him out until the end of August. They play their season opener on Sept. 5 against the Cowboys.

New York was lucky to take wideout Rueben Randle in the second round of this year’s draft. Instead of stepping in as a third receiver to replace Mario Manningham — who signed with San Francisco — he will be counted on for more.

Nicks had 76 catches for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns last year. He had another 28 catches, 444 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs.
