The Giants chose to beef up their secondary Thursday, tabbing Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple. The pick came as something as a surprise considering the needs the Giants have in other areas and the fact that the cornerback position was considered a strength heading into the draft.

Apple has a freakish frame and can re-route receivers at the line. NFL.com’s draft profile of Apple says that the corner “is extremely competitive when the ball is in the air” but that he “can be slow to diagnose and anticipate quarterback’s plans.”

The Giants will pick No. 40 overall and No. 74th overall on Friday.

The top of the draft Thursday night went mostly as planned as the Los Angeles Rams selected California quarterback Jared Goff No. 1 overall. The Eagles, who traded up in the draft with the Browns to land at No. 2, got their man in North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz. Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa had been the No. 1 pick in many mocks early in the draft process and the San Diego Chargers happily scooped him up at No. 3.

Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil had seen his draft stock tumble in recent weeks and he slid even further Thursday night possibly due to an ugly social media episode. Just prior to the start of the draft, his Twitter account posted a video of someone – who looked like Tunsil – smoking a bong/gas mask.

In slightly less bizarre draft day news, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick sent a message in the direction of the Jets. A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Fitzpatrick would “rather not play football” than play for the Jets at their current contract offer. According to Schefter’s report, the Jets aren’t going higher than $8 million per season and that is nowhere close to Fitzpatrick’s desired number. The QB was a steady presence under center for the Jets last season, leading the team to a 10-6 record while throwing 31 touchdowns and 3,905 yards.
