GMO advocate says Monsanto weed killer safe to drink but refuses glass

GMO supporter Dr. Patrick Moore got himself into a sticky situation when he went on French television and claimed that Monsanto’s weed killer Roundup was safe enough to drink. This comes in response to a WHO report that says glyphosate, an ingredient in the weed killer,probably causes cancer.

Moore begs to differ. He says on the French investigative report, “You can drink a whole quart of it and it won’t hurt you,” says Moore.

The interviewer responds, “You want to drink some? We have some here.”

“I’d be happy to, actually,” says Moore. “Not really. But I know it wouldn’t hurt me.”

“If you say so, I have some,” says the interviewer.

“No, no, I’m not stupid,” says Moore.

“So, it’s dangerous?” says the interviewer.

“People try to commit suicide with it and fail regularly,” Moore responds.

“Tell the truth, it’s dangerous,” says the interviewer.

“It’s not dangerous to humans. No, it’s not,” says Moore.

“So, are you ready to drink one glass?” the interviewer says.

“No, I’m not an idiot,” Moore says again.”Interview me about golden rice, that’s what I’m talking about. Otherwise the interview is finished. You’re a complete jerk.”

Moore storms out of the interview after this exchange.

A Monsanto representative tells BoingBoing: “Dr. Moore is not a Monsanto lobbyist or employee. Knowledgeable scientists, consumers and our farmer customers may be familiar with and confident in the safety of glyphosate, but their statements don’t make them lobbyists for our company. Dr. Patrick Moore is one of those individuals. He agrees with the science that supports the safety of glyphosate, and is an advocate for technology and innovation. But as I mentioned, he is not and never has been a paid lobbyist for or employee at Monsanto.”
