Going Gaga for MuchMusic - Metro US

Going Gaga for MuchMusic

The streets will shut down, the stars will come out, and this year, the MuchMusic Video Awards will go Gaga.

Sexy electronic dance star Lady Gaga is the latest performer to be added to the 2009 MMVAs roster. The outdoor show, that annually packs fans outside the MuchMusic headquarters at Queen and John streets in Toronto, takes place on June 21.

That’s when Gaga will join previously announced co-hosting act the Jonas Brothers, who will also take the stage to perform.

“I’m so excited,” said Gaga on the phone from Australia where she’s touring with the Pussycat Dolls. “I love awards shows, especially for music television. I’m planning the performance already, and I can’t wait to do something amazing.”

Although she’s tight-lipped about what the viewing audience can expect to see, she said some sort of pop medley is likely.

A frequent visitor to Canada, Gaga said she considers her northern neighbour a second home, touting the amazing domestic fan base that helped launch her international career.

“You guys sort of put the Lady Gaga flag in the moon,” she said. “I feel Canadian. If it wasn’t for Canada, I would not be where I am today.”

While the full slate of nominees for the show has yet to be released, the UR FAVE peoples’ choice contenders were announced last week. Gaga finds herself vying against Britney Spears, Jonas Brothers, Katy Parry and Lil Wayne in the UR FAVE International Video category for her single Poker Face.

“I am nominated? I didn’t know that!” she said with a laugh. “I don’t know how I will fare, but truthfully, I would rather perform on the stage than win. That’s always how I’ve felt about awards shows. I’m just really happy to be there.”

As for what outfit she’ll wear when she graces the red carpet, Gaga has yet to decide, but said she’s thinking about designing a garment herself.

“I’m sure whatever it is, it must be sexy enough to inspire the foursome that I wish to have with the Jonas Brothers … naturally.”
