Going to war with summer skin problems

Whether you’re hiking up mountains in British Columbia or pounding the pavement in Halifax, summer is a tough time for your face. Protecting it from the sun is the number one thing you can do to keep it young and healthy.

“The summer can take a toll on maintaining a fabulous complexion,” says Toronto beauty expert Cheryl Gushue.

“In this heat, it’s best to stick with a lightweight coverage base like a tinted moisturizer with an SPF to keep those harmful rays from damaging your skin.”

The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends an SPF of at least 30 for all these products — lipstick, lip balm, moisturizer and foundation. Other advice: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, seek shade and avoid the sun at midday.

Your face may also be sweaty and blotchy in the summer. Says Gushue: “Try a matte powder bronzer with a big brush to finish and even out your skin tone. To prevent from over-powdering, you may want to try blotting papers.”
