Google Glass goes on sale to mere mortals — for one day

For more than a year, you may have heard tell of a mystical device called Google Glass. These virtual reality glasses are poised to either take the world by storm, or make a handful of people look like absolute boobs. For one day only, regular Joes and Janes have their chance to determine which theory will prevail by plunking down their wallets to buy a unit or two.

Until today, you had to be invited to something called the Glass Explorer program in order to get your hands on a pair. These invites were usually reserved for industry luminaries or anyone famous on Twitter (like Neil Patrick Harris and, uh, Newt Gingrich). Of course, the invitees still had to pay for it. Google doesn’t do gratis except for, well, every single service we use on the Internet.

How much does being on the cusp of technological revolution cost nowadays? About $1,500, give or take. Yowza! That’s like three iPads — or 750 slices of pizza.
