Greek culture celebrated at festival

Greek Day Though born in Vancouver, Jenny Siormanolakis is always sure not to shy too far away from her Greek roots.

“Growing up so many thousands of kilometres away from Greece, our parents were here in a totally strange country, trying to raise us the best they could,” said Siormanolakis, the event co-ordinator of Greek Day 2009.

The Greek culture was in full display at the Greek Day festival, which was first held in 1974, in the heart of Kitsilano with everything from souvlaki to Greek dancing.

More than just a street party, Greek Day harkens to the street festival back in the motherland, the Panygiri, and for Siormanolakis it’s also about heritage.

“If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going,” says Siormanolakis.
