More than a hundred activists gathered on Second Beach yesterday to demand the federal and provincial governments ban oil tanker traffic along the West Coast.
Since 2007, there have been biweekly shipments of tanker crude oil passing through Burrard Inlet, with each carrying anywhere between 500,000 to 700,000 barrels of oil.
“It’s not a matter if there will be a spill,” said Stephanie Goodwin of Greenpeace.
“(It’s) when there will be a spill.”
An oil spill along Vancouver’s coast would not only wreak havoc on the local marine ecology, but also on the economy, said Rex Weyler, founder of No Tanks!
The day’s protest culminated in a flotilla of about two-dozen boats carrying demonstrators who paddled, motored, and sailed their way to Siwash Point, just below Lions Gate Bridge.
