Grumpy guys of comedy come to NYC

This weekend, through Nov. 9, is the annual New York Comedy Fest. Both new and time-tested comedians are taking the stage throughout NYC, including a few of our favorite funny gents whose pessimistic insights make light of our screwed-up lives.

Bill Maher

You watch him weekly on HBO, and now’s your chance to see him live — outside of a television studio. Known especially for his political satire, Maher is a controversial speaker with an arsenal of anger that takes his scathing delivery from super-dark to hilarious and back before you know which is which. “An Evening with Bill Maher” is Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Beacon Theatre.

Nick Offerman

To really do your due diligence for Movember, you’ve gotta check out the man behind the mustache, Nick Offerman. Known for playing the delightfully dry Ron Swanson on “Parks and Rec,” Offerman recently voiced “The Lego Movie” and starred in “22 Jump Street.” He also released a book on “manliness” just this fall — but, let’s be real, you’re in it for the ’stache. “Nick Offerman: Full Bush” is Saturday at 9:45 p.m. at Beacon Theatre.

Bob Odenkirk

You might have seen his stand-up and sketches on cable in the ’90s, but more recently everyone knows Odenkirk for a little show called “Breaking Bad.” His character’s spin-off, “Better Call Saul,” comes to your television in February 2015. This weekend, he’ll be promoting his book, “A Load of Hooey,” and each ticket to his Gramercy Theater appearance comes with a copy this Sunday at 7 p.m.

Marc Maron

Wry, witty and raw, Marc Maron exemplifies the ultra-jaded “grumpy old man” model of stand-up. Away from the stage, you can catch him on IFC’s “Maron” (now streaming on Netflix!) or his “WTF” podcast, which helped him earn a place on Time’s list of influential people for 2012. You have two opportunities to catch Maron live at the NYU Skirball Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
