Hailey Knox talks Charlie Puth and her full-length album

Social media sensation Hailey Knox turns just 18 next month, but the teen singer-songwriter is spending her February on the road with husband-wife folk band, Us the Duo. She’s not rattled, though. Knox already got her first brush with fame while on tour with Charlie Puth in late 2016, and the “Awkward” singer admits she’s still a bit starstruck from the experience.

“It was surreal because I listen to him on the radio,” she gushes, remembering their first sold-out date at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. “It was literally a dream.”

Currently nominated for iHeartRadio’s Social Media Star Award, the YouNow celeb calls in from the road to discuss her upcoming album, how to stay healthy while on the road and how she keeps up with her family while away from home.

Road warrior

Knox says the biggest concern of being on tour is staying healthy. “The travel takes a toll on you, definitely,” she explains. It’s all about staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, remembering to eat and preserving her voice. “If you get sick, it’s the end.”

Before each show, Knox practices her voice warmups, but she admits she still gets shy. “They get pretty annoying. I would hide in a corner so I don’t annoy everybody,” she giggles.

“I get pretty nervous too, so I try to calm myself down,” adding that she utilizes meditation to reduce her jitters.

Family is everything

Knox jokes about her social media presence, saying her mom loves it and if anything, encourages it. “I’ll send her some photos and she’ll post them, saying ‘Hailey’s in Canada now!’” On tour, her mom and her sister are only a “FaceTime call away,” supporting her in every way they can.

Meanwhile, Knox’s father will join her on tour. “He kind of acts as like security guard in a way,” she adds, “making sure things are going well.”

Ode to the awkward teens

Knox made her debut with EP entitled “A Little Awkward” last June. And, as the name implies, her lyrics for songs like the Meghan Trainor-endorsed “Geeks” and “My Worst Enemy” stemmed from typical high school awkwardness and teenage struggles. While details and a release date for her follow-up full-length are up in the air, Knox assures us something exciting is in the works: “I can’t wait to get this stuff out there!”
