Halifax police to deploy additional wireless cameras

Criminals beware, because you never know who could be watching.

Halifax Regional Police Chief Frank Beazley told city councillors yesterday police plan to use more video surveillance across the municipality to keep a closer eye on law breakers.

“It’s our intention this year to enhance wireless video cameras,” he said in response to a question about police resources from Coun. Jennifer Watts of Connaught-Quinpool during the afternoon’s budget debate.

“We’re going to be able to take these mobile cameras (and) surreptitiously install them at different locations throughout HRM,” he said.

Halifax already has some fixed surveillance cameras.

Police officers will use the portable devices to capture moving images everywhere from concerts to crime “hot spots,” Beazley said, adding the money falls under a small fund he uses to purchase equipment.
