‘Hamilton’ scores record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations

The cultural influence of “Hamilton” stretches so far beyond New York City that “Broadway musical” is almost a footnote on its resume at this point. But the annual awards for greatness on the Great White Way brought the focus back to the show’s roots on Tuesday with a record-setting 16 Tony nominations, including Best Musical.

Creator andstarLin-Manuel Miranda was co-nominated as Best Actor alongside Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Alexander Hamilton’s friend and rival Aaron Burr.

Nominations also went to nearly all of the principal cast, including three out of the five nods for featured actor in a musical, as well as for the score and book to Miranda — who has already won a Pulitzer, Grammy and MacArthur Fellowship for the show, among other accolades.

If you’re wondering about the competition “Hamilton” will be facing, this year’s awards were unofficially dubbed the “HamilTonys” months ago. They’ll be given out on June 12 at the Beacon Theater, and to paraphrase a lyric from the show, it’s not a question of if, Burr, but which ones the musical will take home.
