Happy birthday, Game Boy! The handheld console turns 25

The humble, two-colored Game Boy turned 25 this week. To make you feel old — or young depending on if you have no idea what I’m talking about — Tim Burton’s “Batman” was the number one movie at the box office in 1989 and hair metal was still a thing. Hair metal. Yikes what was that about? In any event, to commemorate the quarter-life crisis of handheld gaming, here are a couple of the best Game Boy titles you can play right now via Nintendo’s Virtual Console for the 3DS.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening: Arguably the best handheld “Zelda” and definitely the most psychedelic, “Link’s Awakening” was probably the first time a noted franchise didn’t offer up a watered down version for the handheld market. Also, it’s so hard. So, so hard.

Tetris: Sure, “Tetris” has since appeared on every video game console, phone and stone tablet in existence, but this is the original. This is the one that sold systems and started the whole notion that “gee, handhelds would be great for puzzle games that can be played in short bursts.” “Candy Crush,” bow down in respect.
