Harper clad in Buffalo plaid

Bet Stephen Harper never thought a photo of himself in his university days would go viral.

Thanks to a new website, vintagevoter.ca, photos of Harper and the other national party leaders in their “glory” days are all over the Internet, Twitter and Facebook.

The site, which has published 10 photos of Harper, Elizabeth May, Michael Ignatieff, Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe in their younger days, was created by Winnipegger David Leibl, 31, and two of his friends.

“Certainly, we never expected it to be this popular,” said Leibl.

Leibl said the response has been overwhelming, and vintagevoter.ca has been a trending topic on Twitter since its launch on Monday.

Leibl calls the site a satirical look at national politics, and he hopes the site will encourage people to become more engaged in the political process.

“I won’t suggest that looking at the site translates into a vote at the box, but it’s my hope … that people will become more engaged and aware of Canadian politics.”

Leibl said he has had responses from at least one political party and he’s hoping other camps will submit photos of their leaders in their younger days.

“We’re, as you say, equal in who we make fun of,” said Leibl.
