A confusing hashtag about the death of Margaret Thatcher convinced thousands of fans of Cher that it was the singer who had died.

The hashtag, #nowthatcherisdead was read as “now that Cher is dead” by many online.

Within minutes social media sites including Twitter were flooded with messages of condolence to the singer’s family.

Comedian Ricky Gervais poined out the error on Twitter, while another poster, @wonderlandmag, tweeted: “Some people on Twitter think Cher’s dead because of #nowthatchersdead hashtag. We give up on humanity.”
