HBO is through with 24/7 Winter Classic series

For hockey fans, especially those in Chicago and Washington it’s the end of a (relatively short) era.

According to sources, particularly Greg Brady of Fan 590 in Toronto, HBO and the NHL are finished producing their 24/7 series leading up to the annual Winter Classic.

The first edition of the show ran in 2011 and followed the Penguins and Capitols, with the second highly acclaimed season following the Flyers and Rangers (and Universe Ilya Bryzgalov). The series also followed the Maple Leafs and Red Wings last season.

Perhaps people think it’s gotten a little stale, or perhaps it is too similar to its more prestigious HBO sports cousin Hard Knocks, which is going on strong.

But unfortunately for those who love the cursing, the pre and post-game antics and narration by Liev Schreiber the show is no more. Though recently the NHL was still in negotiations for the show, HBO reportedly walked away. Luckily for hockey fans (or perhaps not) there are still plenty of outdoor games to get excited about.
