Headed back to school? There’s a lot of apps for that

If you’re heading to school with a new iPhone or iPad, chances are there’s an app or four that can help you study, find your way around campus or even figure out where to go on a Saturday night. Among the most popular on the iTunes App Store:

Scan any book’s ISBN and compare its price to what’s available online.

Review plot summaries and character analyses, then test yourself with quizzes. Titles available include everything from A Tale of Two Cities to The Kite Runner. Works on BlackBerry, too.

Jot down whatever crosses your mind as a note, snapshot or even voice recording. Works on BlackBerry, too.

iStudiez Pro
Manage your schedule, keep track of assignments, and set alarms to remind you of major due dates.

Lose It!
Keep track of your calorie intake. Useful for students hoping to avoid the dreaded Freshman 15.

Discover nearby coffee shops or restaurants. Browse by type, price and make recommendations. Great for students exploring their new neighbourhood. Works on BlackBerry, too.

Some universities provide apps for students. The University of Alberta (itunes.apple.com/us/app/ualberta), Ryerson University (ryerson.ca/rmobile) and the University of Saskatchewan (iusask.usask.ca), developed apps that give students easy access to a campus directory, share the latest academic news and help them navigate school grounds.
