Healthy Lifestyles Festival pie contest encourages smart eating

With the Healthy Lifestyles Festival just weeks away, there’s still time to enter the Raw Vegan Pie Contest.

The contest shows that raw food is more than just carrot sticks and salads, said organizer Natasha Kyssa.

“You can really go beyond, with cheesecakes with nuts and seeds and no dairy, no wheat, no gluten and no sugar,” she said.

“People need to be more mindful of what they’re putting into their bodies,” she said. “Most people have strayed so far from nature. They’re bogged down by processed foods, sugars, caffeine and a lot of toxins.”

Eating raw, she said, improves energy levels and the digestive system and encourages weight loss.

The contest is a part of the free festival, held at Central Park from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., rain or shine, on June 19. The pies must be vegan — that is, not contain any animal products — and uncooked.
