Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino had an FBI file. Who knew?

The file, first obtained by WGBH, details a 2003 probe into comments made about Sprint Telecommunications in 2002. Menino, according to the file, threatened “the company with the loss of a lucrative city contract unless the firm donated $25,000 to the mayoral youth fund.”

According to the file Menino, who died last October and served as Boston’s mayor from 1993 to 2014, threatened to give a Boston Housing Authority contract to AT&T, since that company was sponsoring a summer youth program while Sprint “has done nothing.”

In June of 2002, federal prosecutors found that the case had “prosecutive merit” but authorities ultimately declined to prosecute the matter after reviewing the evidence.

Menino’s FBI file the file states the matter would be “reopened should sufficient information be developed that substantiates the allegations regarding Mayor Menino.”
