High intensity exercise has big benefits: Study

Here’s more evidence that higher intensity is better exercise. In a recent study, exercise physiologist Gordon Bell from the University of Alberta recruited 128 physically inactive but healthy men and women between the ages of 27 and 65. He divided them into two groups: one group walked and the other did a traditional aerobic fitness program.

After six months, those in the fitness program enjoyed greater health benefits than those who merely walked.

The fitness program had greater benefits in terms of blood pressure and peak oxygen intake — a way of testing breathing to see if the body has adapted well to the stress of exercising.

Bell said that a walking program is still a healthy thing to do, and more effective in one way — people are more likely to stick with it.
