Highbrow happenings are plenty in Halifax

With a symphony, numerous art galleries and live theatre options, there are lots of cultural events happening in Halifax throughout the school year.

The Atlantic Fringe Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary and runs until Sept. 12. The Festival will features 230 performances.

For art lovers, Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University and Saint Mary’s University all have galleries. Halifax is also home to the ViewPoint Gallery, which always features an eclectic mix of exhibits. Running until Oct. 3, Behind the Scenes features photos taken behind the scenes on film sets.

Neptune Theatre will present Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a classic tale of love and tragedy. The production will run from Sept.14 to Oct. 17.

From Sept. 16 to Sept. 25, the red carpet will be rolled out in Halifax for the 30th annual Atlantic Film Festival. Eighty-five feature films, 96 shorts and two retrospectives will be screened.

On Feb. 4, the sounds of sweet soul music will come alive as Symphony Nova Scotia performs with local crooner Dutch Robinson, covering songs by legends such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and James Brown.

The Simpsons will meet MacBeth in comedian Rick Miller’s production of MacHomer, Feb. 1 to Feb. 13 at Neptune Theatre. The critically acclaimed one-man production features MacBeth told through the voices of The Simpsons, more than 50 of them in fact.

On May 6 and 7, Symphony Nova Scotia will hold Beer and Beethoven, a popular event which mashes classical, big-band and Maritime music.
