Highly likely Derrick Rose has played his last game as a member of the Knicks

It appears as though New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose’s knee injury was worse than originally expected.

On Sunday, The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Rose will miss the rest of the 2016-17 season with a torn meniscus.

Rose missed the Knicks’ last two games in what was originally described as knee soreness. Now, it has developed into yet another major injury to add on to an extensive list of health issues that derailed his promising career.

After three-straight All-Star appearances from 2009-2012 that included winning league MVP honors in 2010, Rose could not stay on the court for long as a member of the Chicago Bulls.

In the 2012-13 season opener, Rose tore his ACL and missed the entire year. The following season saw him tear the meniscus in his other knee, which limited 2013-14 to just 10 games.

He tore it once again in the following season and missed the final 20 games.

Last season saw Rose play in 66 games, his most since 2010-11, but a fractured orbital bone sidelined him for 16 games.

The inability to stay healthy forced the Bulls to deal Rose to the Knicks during the 2016 draft. While his durability was always in question, his skillset on the floor provided an immediate upgrade for New York at the point guard position.

Off-court legal issues and a sudden, random disappearance threw unexpected wrenches into his season, but Rose was generally productive for the Knicks in 64 games as he averaged 18 points and six assists per night.

However, his name did pop up at the trade deadline in a possible deal that would have sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Ricky Rubio, per ESPN’s Marc Stein.

Rose also possesses an expiring contract that will make him an unrestricted free agent this summer. This latest injury will not help his chances at landing a long-term deal.

The 28-year-old will require surgery that should take six to eight weeks to heal, per Wojnarowski, which means many teams might not approach him until at least mid-May.

It will also end any notion of him getting a max deal in free agency.

With a deep point guard class available in this summer’s draft, the Knicks could use their lottery pick to find a floor general for the future. That would likely spell Rose’s end with the Knicks and force him to test the waters elsewhere.

There is a chance he re-signs if his demands are reasonable and New York decides to draft a forward in June, which would likely hinge on their ability to move Carmelo Anthony during the offseason.
