One of only two flyable Lancaster airplanes left in the world will be making a pit stop in the city this summer to mark the Aero Space Museum of Calgary’s 30th anniversary.
Out of a total of nearly 7,400 Lancasters produced for the Second World War, only 26 survived, said museum volunteer Herb Grieder.
“This actual Lancaster that’s going to be coming to Calgary did not see any war service but it’s dedicated to a famous World War Two war hero,” he said.
The Mynarski Memorial Lancaster is named after Andrew Mynarski, an air gunner who was killed in 1944 while fighting in Europe. He was only one of only three Canadian aircrew to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
“World War Two was very instrumental with Canada’s freedom … and (the Lancaster) just represents history that’s almost been forgotten by the younger generation,” said Grieder.
The Aero Space museum is co-hosting the plane with SAIT from Aug. 3-12 at the Art Smith Aero Centre.
