Phil Hughes can’t find much of anything these early spring days.
As Hughes continues the search for his velocity and location, he would also like to see the first swing and miss on the four-seam fastball. It is a pitch he threw nearly 64 percent of the time at an average of 92.6 mph last year.
In two starts this season, spanning just six innings, Hughes has thrown 137 pitches. Of those pitches, 49 have been four-seam fastballs and none have been missed by opposing bats.
“You can tell by swings,” said Hughes, who makes his third start tonight against Baltimore (7:05, YES). “I’m normally getting swings and misses on my fastball. When I’m not — that’s the indicator.”
