H&M to stop cutting clothes

Clothing retailer H&M said yesterday it would stop its practice of cutting holes in clothes it can’t sell before throwing them away and start donating them to charity. Trash bags of unsold and slashed items from H&M were discovered in trash bags on 35th Street, The New York Times reported.

It’s not unheard of for luxury brand designers to destroy their clothing, to avoid devaluing the brand.

“There is no need to throw away good materials that can be recycled and turned back into clothing,” said Taurean Smith of PlayBack Clothing, a Dumbo-based recycled clothing company.
