Hockey HEROS reach out

The school gym at Montrose Elementary was filled with a few lucky students from across the city and thousands of dollars worth of hockey equipment yesterday afternoon.

Bringing them together was Norm Flynn, executive director of the Hockey Education Reaching Out Society, or HEROS.

A charitable organization committed to empowering children through ice hockey, HEROS works with girls and boys from socio-economically challenged neighbourhoods across Canada.

To present HEROS with a $1-million donation was Dawn Newton, senior manager of community investment at Telus.

“We started in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. With the generous donation from Telus today, we’re going to be able to take it to more communities and help more kids throughout the country,” said Flynn. “We have 10 programs right now in seven cities; we will be able to expand that even more with $1 million.”

“I think it’s a really great way for the kids in the neighbourhood to get together, to do something fun,” said Shawna Klassen, a Grade 7 student.

This is the second year Klassen has been enrolled in the program.
