Home owner hung out to dry over oil spill?

Department of Environment officials are investigating an oil spill at a home on Rocky Lake Drive in Bedford that leaked about 400 litres of fuel.

The eight-year-old tank, which had just been filled Thursday morning, began to leak onto the basement floor from two holes in the bottom.

Oil spilled down the driveway, onto the road and into a pond across the street.

“A small amount of oil entered the HRM storm system and entered a small pond,” said Lori Errington, communications adviser for the DoE.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services stopped the spill Thursday afternoon, said Capt. Brad Connors.

“We used our absorbent materials to contain the spill,” Connors said.

Errington said the damage to the home, sidewalk and pond have yet to be determined.

She said the owner of the residence will be responsible for the oil cleanup.
