Honest Ed’s heads back in time for discounts

With all the talk of a faltering economy, and economists predicting the worst recession since the 1930s, Russell Lazar — general manager of Honest Ed’s — decided it was time to give the consumer a break.

Since Thursday, the deep discount department store at Bathurst and Bloor streets — which got its start in 1948 — has been offering prices reminiscent of the Depression on a selection of goods. Everything from handkerchiefs to men’s underwear is on sale for mere pennies until Saturday.

“Everywhere you hear people are depressed, worried and out of work. So you think, what can you do to make people happy?” Lazar said. He came up with the idea of rolling back prices to Dirty Thirties levels.
