Can you believe it? It’s 2014. We may not have hoverboards and the Tupac hologram was just a one-off, but there’s plenty of other futuristic gizmos to keep us from reading books and going outside. Don’t you worry about that. Here are some of the cool gadgets coming out this year.

Oculus Rift (TBA)
Ever since Captain Picard donned a detective’s costume and entered the holodeck, mankind has dreamed of wasting time in virtual reality playgrounds. Something that immersive is still a ways off but we are certainly making strides to get there. Enter the Oculus Rift, essentially a VR helmet that puts you inside video games. If you move your head to the left, your avatar will do the same, and so on. The tech is pretty astounding and early reports indicate that it will make you puke, both from utter awe and from nausea.

Pebble Steel (Later this month, $250)
Ah, the smartwatch. These little Dick Tracy doodads have yet to catch on with consumers, but certainly have caught on in corporate boardrooms. In other words, there are tons of them coming out. Pebble was the first kid on the block when its Kickstarter smashed all previous records in 2012. Now it’s back with the Pebble Steel. This watch has eaten plenty of fish oil, as its smarts are through the roof. It can do pretty much everything your phone can do, and then some. Also, its grown-up form factor is pretty swank.

Apple stuff (Whenever they want)
Apple likes to play things close to the vest, but we all know it’ll release a bunch of cool stuff this year. Rumors swirl that an extra large iPad using a chipset as powerful as a Macbook Air will drop in May. Many sources have also reported they are working on a smartwatch of their own codenamed — wait for it — the iWatch.
