Hot Plate: Home Frite crams an entire salad into its Herb-ocado dip

Salads are usually offered as a substitute for French fries, but not at Home Frite.

The Belgian fry shop has been a weekend-only Smorgasburg staple since 2013, but this summer it got a prime spot inside South Street Seaport’s seasonal Smorg market (11 Fulton St.) There, their cones of thick, lightly crisped fries pair perfectly with the seaside feel and salty air.

About that salad though — at Home Frite, it’s actually a dipping sauce. Dubbed the Herb-ocado, the condiment consists of an avocado base blended with tomatillo, arugula, cucumber and an entire grocery aisle of herbs, from basil to cilantro. “That just came out of us wanting a chimichurri and a green goddess dressing,” explains founder and co-owner Ian Vernon. “It’s all fresh, none of it is cooked.”

The result is like a punched-up salsa verde, bright and completely addictive. If you’re not sold on the premise, the Home Frite team is happy to offer a taste. “We have to almost promote it,” Vernon acknowledges. “A lot of the sauces that we have are very rich and savory flavors. This is just bright; it kind of fools you while you’re eating it.”

So go ahead and tell mom you ate something green this week — no fork required.
