Hotel opens at U of C

Kick up your heels and stay awhile at one of Canada’s first on-campus hotels located at the University of Calgary.

Hotel Alma — named after the Latin word for “nurturing” — is a 100 room full-service hotel right in the heart of the university’s campus, and all revenue generated will go back into the facility, according to the school’s associate vice-provost.

“I think our guests will be pleased to know that part of their travel budget will go towards improving facilities for our students,” Voula Cocolakis said, adding revenue will go towards the day-to-day operations as well as the student residence also located in the same building.

There are 85 euro-style standard rooms and 15 one bedroom suites, a bistro and conference facilities for up to 125 people, located in the school’s newest building, the Dr. Fok Ying Tung International House.

“The hotel is really quite amazing and our hope is that it will catch on. We’re very excited about it,” Cocolakis said.

Hotel Alma marketing manager Tarah Blum said university students will also prosper with the new hotel by gaining valuable work experience.

“Especially those in the business and hospitality industry. This provides them a chance to get some hands-on training,” she said.

The special opening rates range from $109 for the standard room and $139 for the suites and are in effect until Dec. 20.
