How an education in information technology keeps you in demand

According to the Wired magazine Web site, 703,593 people subscribe to the publication. But how many of them threw the magazine away in a huff after its reporting on Zen and VirtualBox systems?

How many have installed a virtualization platform on their computers? And how many have any idea what all of that means? If you do (and you don’t already work in information technology) you could someday be one of the most in-demand people in the work force: an IT systems administrator.

Systems managers and administrators are the core of the IT field and a great place to get your foot in the door. They’re the service every business needs on a daily basis — providing onsite hardware and software maintenance and installation.

In 2006, the Bureau of Labor Statistics designated this field as having “much faster than average growth,” its highest category. But while many broke into the field with little or no formal education, today most employers require a bachelor’s. A B.S. in information technology is a good ticket.
