The holidays are fast approaching. In fact, sometimes these few days go by so quickly that it can be difficult to feel truly connected to the spirit of the time we’re celebrating. We find that taking a hands-on approach is an excellent way to take full advantage of the holidays. Because of this, we’re here to guide you through hand-making one of the most important components of the Hanukkah celebration: candles!

What You’ll Need

Utility knife

Ruler

Sheets of beeswax (cut into 2 x 4.5 inch rectangles)

Wicks (cut into 5.5 inch lengths)

Blow-dryer (or anything that can warm the wax)

What to Do

1. Once everything has been cut to the required sizes, warm the wax with the blow-dryer to make it more pliable. This should take between 10 and 15 seconds.

2. Lay one of the 5.5-inch wicks along the edge of a cut sheet of beeswax. The wick’s knot should be at the bottom, and ¾ inch of the wick should hang beyond the wax.

3. Roll the wax tightly around the wick. To make sure that it is sealed and smooth, run your finger firmly over the seam.

4. Once you have made the first candle, compare it to the size of your menorah to make sure it fits. If not, keep making slight modifications to the wax until it’s a perfect fit.

It’s really that easy. We hope you’ll enjoy this holiday-themed DIY project. Happy Hanukkah!
