HST coming off basic home electricity

The provincial portion of the HST in Nova Scotia will be removed from basic home electricity charges effective Oct. 1.

Premier Darrell Dexter says he is fulfilling the NDP’s promise to help ease costs for families with today’s announcement.

The reduction comes in the form of a rebate equal to the eight per cent provincial portion of the HST on basic home electricity bills.

Households whose electricity consumption exceeded an average of 27.4 kilowatt hours per day were previously eligible for the rebate, but the announcement made by Dexter widens the tax break.

The government says almost 200,000 additional households will receive the rebate under its announcement, and another 200,000 will see greater savings.

It says the tax rebate is expected to save about $15 million for the remainder of the 2009-10 fiscal year.
