Hub comedians, Yankee-haters go after pinstripes

The most storied rivalry in sports typically heats up as the baseball schedule winds down and the August temperatures soar.

But a new book is helping fuel the fire that is the Red Sox–Yankees rivalry.

“Things that Might Annoy a Yankee Fan” was written by Boston comedians — and obviously lifelong Red Sox fans — Dave Barend and Paul Nardizzi.

Although Barend grew up in upstate New York, he eventually found his way and moved to the Bay State.

“When you grow up surrounded by Yankees fans, you either become a Yankees fan or, if you have half a brain, you end up hating Yankees fans,” he said. “I have half a brain, so I became a Yankee-hater.”

The duo said the suggestions in the book come from their experiences with Yankees fans (like Barend’s brother-in-law).

The annoyances range from the silly to the sadistic, and Nardizzi said the book contains a warning that some of the suggestions — like lighting a Yankees play-by-play broadcaster on fire and then urinating on him — are not meant to actually take place.

“Some of them can’t literally be done,” Nardizzi said.

With the Yankees coming to Fenway for a weekend series, the pair plans to be at the Baseball Tavern signing copies before the games. They also will appear on NESN before the start of Friday’s game.
