Ideas for a fun, not fussy, Mother’s Day in NYC

Turns out when mom is no longer in charge of curfews and criticizing our choice of breakfast, she can be pretty great to hang out with. So why take her for a stuffy meal or buy gifts that couldn’t mean nearly as much as spending a day together as the besties you’ve become?

Meet your mom atThe Doughnut Project(10 Morton St., West Village) — or surprise her by getting in line early, since their off-the-wall creations often require a bit of waiting. You’re both adults, so doughnuts are totally breakfast, whether or not you’re brave enough to try their sweet-savory everything bagel hybrid. Then catch an Uber to the annualFrieze Art Fairon Randall’s Island ($49, noon-6 p.m.), which travels the world bringing together the best of galleries’ holdings, the most promising new talents and on-site exhibitions. Two highlights: a reverse pickpocket who will leave guests with surprise souvenirs, and a donkey munching on hay beneath a chandelier. Why not. They’ve even brought along some of the city’s chicest restaurants including Cosme, Superiority Burger and Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream.

Rooftop brunch season is here, and a patio table atCatch(21 Ninth Ave., Meatpacking) is definitely the way to go, with cinnamon roll pancakes and farro health bowls (no judgement, remember?) Whatever you decide, after brunch stroll over to the “professional grade” 18-hole mini golf course onPier 25(225 West St. in Hudson River Park, $6 cash only) for a much more manageable afternoon on the links, then watch the sun set over cocktails and oysters on the deck ofGrand Banks, the historic wooden schooner moored at the pier — all the decadence of the Hamptons, without the bus ride.

Broaden mom’s brunch horizons atMission Chinese Food(171 E. Broadway) with their dim sum and small plates menu full of everything but French toast and eggs Benedict, then stand back and marvel as she haggles stylish duds down to nothing while you browse Chinatown together. Make it toThe Pit(123 E. 24th St.) by 4 p.m. to see three comedians take the stage with their moms — who they claim are scientifically proven to be the funnier parent — and celebrate them with some improv ($10).

Admit it, you’ve been curious about the perpetual fiesta that isSeñor Frog’s(11 Times Square) ever since the NYTimes didn’t hate it. If your mom’s up for phallic cocktail glasses and joining a conga line between courses, why not try it for brunch? Continuing your raunchy theme, instead of opting for the family-friendly musicals of Broadway, walk a few blocks to The Laura Pels Theatre (111 W. 46th St.) forThe Robber Bridegroom, the story of a Southern gentleman by day who turns Robin Hood by night that is an action-packed, sexy tribute to the bad boys we’ve all fallen for at some point (Sunday matinee at 2 p.m., $99-$109). Toast your day atBathtub Gin(132 Ninth Ave.), the speakeasy hidden behind a coffee shop, but, like mom, has plenty of fun by night (there’s an actual bathtub, though try not to end up in it.)
