MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says the Canadian government should be contributing more money to help earthquake victims in Haiti.
Ignatieff says the $5 million in aid that Ottawa announced today is a good start but Canada should give more.
Speaking to University of Toronto students this morning, the Liberal leader said Canadians should stand together to help Haitians, who are dealing with horrific scenes of devastation.
He also said Canada should make changes to speed up its visa process to help families get relatives out of the devastated country.
Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Haitian communities, with more than 100,000 living here – mostly in Quebec.
The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck Haiti on Tuesday was the strongest to hit the impoverished Caribbean country in more than 200 years.
