Immigrant groups rally in Queens to declare ‘hate-free zone’

A “Hate-Free Zone” will be declared in Queens, as neighborhood groups and immigrant communities rally on Friday.

Jackson Heights is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country and home to working-class immigrant, Muslim, LGBTQ, Latino, Filipino, Caribbean and South Asian communities, according to organizers.

“As frontline communities who are looking for ways to come together to defend ourselves and gain mutual support in light of increased racism, xenophobia, and bigotry ushered in by the incoming Trump administration, we hope this action will help jump start similar efforts in immigrant neighborhoods in the city and nationwide to declare our neighborhoods as ‘Hate-Free Zones,’” a statement from organizers reads.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a press conference in Diversity Plaza, 37th Road between 73rd and 74th streets, Jackson Heights, followed by a march to Corona Plaza.
